Cooma Cats vs ADFA 9 August 2008
It was the last match of the year as cats took on Murrumbidgee at Kambah. Once again cats got of to a poor start with inaccurate kicking costing Cooma dearly, as they kicked 7 behinds, no goals to Murrumbidgee’s 7goals 8 behinds at half time.
The cats came out looking to restore some pride and outscored Murrumbigee 3goals to 1. Murrumbidgee kicked away in the final quarter to win comfortably 12g 15b 87 to Cats 3g 9b 27. A major highlight of the game was the match up between Minchy and Murrumbigees Patto which was a bigger mismatch than a fight between Ali and Shirley Temple.
Best for the cats were Tim Dalwood, Scott Minchum, Joel Hodder, Dave Gill and Mike Gratwick. So ends another season for the cats and although the results have not been what we would have liked, this has been a year of rebuilding and we have the basis of a good side. If the club can continue to build on this current team and recruit well then the future looks good for the cats.
Cooma Cats vs ADFA 2 August 2008
It was a game effort by the Cats on Saturday with the boys going down by 51 points to a very fit and fast ADFA. But it was the same old story with one bad quarter (the second) proving costly ADFA kicked 6 goals to 1 to take a commanding and match winning lead.
Cooma showed plenty of heart in the final 2 quarters and only poor finishing in front of goal (4 goals 11 behinds) prevented Cooma from narrowing the gap.
Best for Cooma was Chris McDonald who in only his second game for the season played a great game in the ruck. Other players who played well for Cooma were James Tatham, Rob Brown, Stu Butterfield, Andy McIntyre, Credence and Josh Stapleton
SCORE Cats 7 Goals 13 Behinds 55 Points ADFA 16g 10b 106p
Cooma Cats vs Harman 26 July 2008
Cooma took on 5th placed Harman at snowy oval on Saturday. The last time we met Harman they ran out winners by 77 points so Cooma knew that they were in for a tough match.
The 1st quarter was very even with Harman leading by 1 point 22 to 21. The second quarter was all Harman who kicked 6 goals to the Cats 1.
2nd half was all Cooma who kicked 7 goals to 3 but were unable to make up the deficit and lost by 18 points. Once again Cooma were let down by 1 poor quarter. Goal kickers for Cooma were Rob Brown 3, Tatts 2 and 1 each to Heater, Tom Williams, Tiny, Azzo, Adrian Decol and Mal Paterson.
It was great to see Ian Tucker pull the boots on and win the pizza award Dave Gill won the pie shop award. Best for Cooma Rob Brown, Tatts, Buzz Wilkins, Adrian Decol , Heater, Dave Gill and young Mal Pato.
The cats also ran a very successful Auskick day before the match with 40 young players learning about the game and then enjoying a free BBQ afterwards.
There will be another Auskick session from 10am to 12 this Saturday before the cats home game against ADFA. Congratulations to Stu Butterfield for the well organised and professional way that the Auskick is run. The cats and Harman returned to the Cooma Ex-service’s Club to celebrate old boys day and present a cheque for $1500 to the ACT Eden Monaro Cancer Support Group.
We would also like to thank the Harman boys who passed around the hat and raised another $150 for this great cause. It was a great night enjoyed by all.
SCORE Cats 72 Harman 90
Cooma Cats vs Goulburn 19 July 2008
The Cats made the road trip to Kenmore oval Goulburn on Saturday to take on 4th placed Goulburn swans. The swans came out firing in the 1st quarter and the Cats had no answer as a fast running Swans kicked 41 points to nil. It was beginning to look like a rout as the Swans kicked the first 2 goals of the 2nd quarter, then the Cats lifted and for the rest of the match played some of there best footy of the season. Cooma’s hard tackling and never say die attitude unsettled the swans and saw them close the gap to less than 30 points at the start of the final quarter. The Swans out scored Cooma by 6 goals to 3 in the last quarter to run out 56 point winners.
Although not reflected in the score this was a great effort by the Cats. In past years after a bad start like this they may well have dropped there bundle but not this year. There has been a marked improvement in both skill levels and determination and if the players can keep this up for next weeks game against 5th placed Harman on Saturday then they may well surprise the strong Harman side.
Best for Cooma were Damian Azzo, Jimmy Russell, Rob Brown, Minchy, Andy McIntyre, Joel the Giant and Dave Gill.
Score Cats 52 Goulburn 108
Cooma Cats vs Gungahlin 12 July 2008
It was a bleak and cold day that greeted the footballers at Snowy oval on Saturday as the cats took on second placed Gungahlin.
Gungahlin kicked with the wind in the 1st quarter and kicked 4 goals to 1 to lead 25 points to 7.
The 2nd and 3rd quarters saw the Cats more than hold there own against the taller and well drilled Gungahlin side.
Tough defending from Cooma kept Gungahlin to only 3 goals for the 2nd and 3rd quarters . The Cats however could not convert numerous opportunities in front of goal and could only manage 1 goal and 6 behinds.
The score blew out in the final quarter with Gungahlin kicking 7 goals to the cats 2. Best on ground was Chris Hayes, Adam Azzo and Tatts with Jimmy Russell winning the Cooma’s Original hot bake award and Rob Brown taking the Capital Pizza award.
The boys then scrubbed up for the Casino night at the Exservo’s which was a Huge night and was enjoyed by every one who attended.
Score Cats 31 Gungahlin 96
Cooma Cats vs Eastlakes 28 June 2008
A great win for the cats on Saturday.
Cooma cats put in one of their best performance's of the year with a great display of hard and aggressive football to defeat Eastlake’s on there home ground. Right from the first bounce the cats put it to the taller Eastlake’s side with some ferocious tackling and close marking, even so the match was very close with Eastlake’s holding a 6 point lead at half time.
The third quarter saw the cats start to gain the ascendancy with some wonderful passages of play highlighted by accurate passing and great defending. The Cats scored 3 goals to 1 and led by 5 points going into the final quarter. Eastlake’s kicked the 1st goal of the final quarter to take the lead, but from then on it was all Cat’s power as Cooma kicked 5 goals straight to win by 30.
Nothing epitomised the cats efforts than Buzz Wilkins tackle against a much larger opponent in the final quarter that led to a turn over and a Cooma goal.
On a day when every player put in, the hardest part was deciding Cooma’s best on ground however Adrian Decol got the nod with a great display of clever footy highlighted by his kicking two goals and setting up numerous Cooma attacks. Other players who played well were Buzz Wilkins, Jimmy Russell ,Damian and Adam Azzo, Minchy and Rob Brown.
Cooma have a bye next week before taking on Gungahlin at snowy oval on the 12th, after the game the Cats are holding a casino night to raise money for the ACT Eden Monaro Cancer Support Group at the Cooma Ex-service’s Club, all are welcome, tickets are $35 and are available at the Ex-service’s Club, Coffey’s and the Alpine Hotel.
Cooma Cats vs Yass 21 June 2008
Cooma Cats had a tough ask on Saturday when they took on the undefeated Yass Kangaroos at snowy on Saturday. Adam azzo kicked the 1st goal of the match for the cats, however Yass soon took control to lead 21 points to 6 at quarter time. The Yass side really began to dominate in the second quarter using there height advantage and long kicking game to out score Cooma by seven goals to two and lead by 66 points to 21.
The Cats came out determined to make Yass earn every point and played some of there best footy of the season. The Cats back line led by Jimmy Russell and Adrian Decol restricted Yass to only four goals in the second half. Yass went on to win 101 to 28 but it was a much improved performance by the Cats and if they can play with the same determination and enthusiasm against Eastlake on Saturday they should acquit themselves well. Best for Cooma was Jimmy Russell who won the Alpine Hotel best on ground award. Adrian Decol and Dave Gill were second and third. Mike Gratwick won the Cooma Original Hot bake pie shop award and Mal Paterson the Capital dial a Pizza award.
Other players who played well were Heater, Minch, Adam Azzo, Rob Brown, Buzz Wilkins and Andy McIntyre.
Cooma Cats vs Murrumbidgee 14 June 2008
In what was a very disappointing performance, the Cats squandered a 33 point lead at half time to go down to Murrumbidgee by 23 points.
The Cats came out firing in the 1st quarter kicking 4 goals to 1 against the wind and playing some really good football.
A failure to convert numerous scoring chances in the 2nd quarter saw the Cats kick only 2 goals with the wind and this proved to be decisive in the outcome of the match.
Being on the receiving end of some curious and at times pedantic umpiring decisions certainly didn’t help the Cats in the third quarter but this was still no excuse as Murrumbidgee kicked 6 goals to nil to take a 10 point lead at three quarter time.
Murrumbidgee kicked 5 goals to Cooma’s 3 in the final quarter to run out comfortable winners.
Coffey’s hotel best on ground was Ken Lemire with Rob Brown, Damian Azzo, Dave Gill and Johnny Madeyes also playing well.
Cats 9.11-65 Murrumbidgee 13.10-88
Cooma Cats vs Cootamundra 31 May 2008
The cats travelled over the mountain for the return match against Cootamundra on Saturday. It was always going to be a tough match for an injury ravaged Cooma to take on a fired up Coota on there home track, but the Cats showed real fighting spirit to push Coota all the way. Coota established an early break and halfway into the second quarter lead by fifty points from then on however the Cats dug deep kicking five straight unanswered goals to close the gap to twenty points at half time.
The second half was a tough game of footy with both sides going in hard. Coota managed to steady the ship and kept Cooma at bay to win by 30 points.
Damian Azzo played a great game in the ruck and was the best player on the ground, other players who played well were Rob Brown, Adrian Decol, Indra, Minchy and tats.
Scores Cooma 1-5 11 Coota 4-3 27 6-5 41 9-7 61 8-7 55 14-9 93 11-13 79 16-13 109
17 May 2008
It was a cold and windy day at Snowy oval on Saturday when the Cats took on the Belconnen magpies.
Belconnen kicked with the wind in the 1st quarter and skipped away to a handy 20 point lead at quarter time. The cats only goal came from a brilliant banana kick from our star full forward Shaun Wilde.
Kicking with the wind in the second quarter the cats out scored Belconnen but inaccurate kicking saw Cooma still behind at half time.
Belconnen kicked away in the third to establish a match winning lead at three quarter time.
Two quick goals from the Cats early in the fourth saw some hope of a come back however Belconnen regrouped and hung on to win by 28pts.
Scores Cooma 1-1 7 Belconnen 4-3 27 3-6 24 5-5 35 3-7 25 8-12 60 7-10 52 11-14 80
Cooma Cats vs Harman Hogs 3 May 2008
It was a tale of two-halves for the Cats with a bigger stronger Harman side dominating the smaller Cooma team all over the ground to take a 77 point lead into the sheds at half time.
The Cats came out determined to make Harman really earn their win and proceeded to play some inspired running footy. The final quarter from the Cats was outstanding and they out-scored Harman 28 points to 15.

Cooma Monaro Express - AFL News
24 April 2008 - 11:53AM
Team spirit spurs victory The Cats wore black arm bands for their first home game of the season and took part in a one-minute silence to pay respect to former Cats' player Chris Collins, who lost his battle with cancer last October. Former president and Cats life member Kevin Jackson gave the side a pep talk to ignite their passion for the game and play for the memory of their fallen predecessors. "I said a few words about Don Thomas, who died on-field in 1982, and someone else talked to them about Chris Collins, so hopefully that inspired the Cats to drive on a bit harder," said Jackson. Cooma put in a strong effort from the get-go, scoring four goals within minutes and running and passing the ball to keep possession as best they could in the first quarter. Although Cootamundra had more chances at goal their attempts were inaccurate, which led to more behinds rather than goals. Cooma's Shaun Wilde (1), Health McCrae (3) and Tom Williams (2) were accurate in their attempts, which led to a 6.1.37 to 2.9.21 quarter time score. The Cats, who managed to limit Cootamundra to one behind, extended its lead in the second quarter, thanks to two goals from Andrew McIntyre. The score at half time was Cooma 8.7.55 - 2.10.22. The Cats' performance fell a part and didn't stick to their game plan in the third quarter, despite some encouraging words from the coach and a suggestion to treat the game like it was nil-all. Cooma was running and passing the ball and relied more on kicking the ball to the front line, which often missed the mark, leading to a scramble for the ball. Cootamundra could not capitalise on this chance, recording only one goal and a behind in the third to make the score at the end of the quarter Cooma unchanged on 8.7.55 - 3-11-29. Cooma came back from its lull in the third, returning to its game plan, and playing a strong attack, which kept possession in the Cats' hands and in their territory for most of the fourth quarter. The Cats recorded seven goals in the last quarter thanks to Rob Brown (2), and Tom Williams, Lochie King, Fab Pielli and Damien Asanovski. Assistant coach Jim Darley said this was an outstanding performance by the Cats and he hoped it would continue when they meet Eastlake at snowy this Saturday. "It was fantastic to have a win as they've never beaten Cootamundra before," said Darley. "Our handball and teamwork was fantastic on the weekend. We played to our game plan, which we've been trying to get them to do all year," he said. |
